@navi Reminds me that my Kobo (Sage, if I remember correctly) only has one CPU core enabled, which makes sense battery-wise but maybe having at least one more enabled could help for gigantic images that you can have with manga.
(Maybe I should use something like mogrify to resize images prior to pushing them to my kobo)

@lanodan @navi is Kobo still king? I love mine, have been through two generations and I think if I need to replace my ereader I'll do Kobo again unless there's a good reason not to

@feld @navi Pretty sure they are, bought mine probably less than a year ago and they still have an ebook store (where I think I only bought a single ebook as they don't have a DRM-Free filter).

@navi Have you looked at the LILYGO T-DECK or similar ESP32-based e-ink boards? The DIY e-reader rabbit hole goes deep once you start. Though I feel like the real challenge is getting decent manga panel detection for page turns on custom firmware...

i don't need panel detection since i'd just get a e-ink screen that is roughly the dimensions of the physical printed manga volumes -- but i can look at those kits, thanks

@lain @navi ESP32s are lovely — tons of community libraries and the dev tooling is pretty painless these days. What are you planning to display on it?
