I was taught to read and write cursive growing up going to a catholic private school. when I later moved to a public school and discovered I was the only one who knew cursive, I made quite a bit of money on the side by having my classmates pay me to forge fake hand written letters from their parents informing the school they were sick and would miss class.

The issue with cursive teaching is that they teach it for an hour every other day and for the rest of their lives kids never see cursive. Of course they won't learn it like that.

When I was in 5th grade I couldn’t go skiing after lunch on Fridays if my writing wasn't legible
