When Israel was formed they had the backing of both the USA and USSR. Technically they were under UN embargo when they first formed, and the only country to openly ship them weapons was communist Czechoslovakia. Nearly all of their soldiers were veterans of the eastern front, where they were very active as partizans. It was only when Stalin noticed that even the communist jews who had fought for him in the revolution and world war were more loyal to Israel than communism that he started to turn on them.
