@sun I think it was incremental. As Catholics like to point out, the rise of Protestantism did a lot for it, too. That's just the most recent example - it goes all the way back, you can see the Egyptian world progress from one of magical immanence to one where magic is something that must be performed in increasingly complex ceremony.

Just as the rise of monarchy mutually reinforced the ancient, hierarchical and duty-driven religions of their times... monarchies inevitably fell with time due to their own dysgenic self-sabotage.
