@sun The more modern our way of thinking gets, the more we need crutches to attain magical thinking.
@druid this is so true, even before you get into storytelling for fun. we don't see the world the way the ancients did, much at all
@sun We knew it was happening, too. The progression of the yuga cycle, the gotterdammerung, the elves retreating from human contact, the inevitable fall of Zeus, whatever. There's a feeling of inevitability to the rise of reason.
@druid do you think it was incremental or did it happen all at once with the announcement that the great god Pan was dead

republicanization. or more accurately, dynastic decline.
The American Revolution occurred during the madness of king George III (he was literally mentally ill). The fall of the Tsar overlapped significantly with the family cult drama, the Tsarina allowing pedo Rasputin access to the princesses. Puyi - the child emperor of China who was installed by the Japanese in Manchuria - was a closeted homosexual and basketcase.
Just as the rise of monarchy mutually reinforced the ancient, hierarchical and duty-driven religions of their times... monarchies inevitably fell with time due to their own dysgenic self-sabotage.
