@Phobos I have a lot of opinions about how the GPL holds back innovation, experimentation, etc and it's not suitable for building a standard because you don't want GPL code to be a reference implementation because companies can't build useful products around it with their own enhancements

One story I found particularly damning was around the design of a new ARM cpu and how it wasn't legal to distribute qemu modified to implement this architecture because the GPL, so it was very hard to get partners access to a test environment to validate the CPU without requiring you share proprietary information about the CPU by distributing the GPL code changes too ...
