@feld yep same ones. I’m going to see if I can send them back and get some €€CASH$$. What I see is repeater controller disconnects on every system I have them in. Did yours actually fail completely?

@dch Just the disconnects. Sometimes randomly kicked out of my mirror vdev, sometimes nonfunctional at boot. Manually adding it back in to the vdev and forcing a scrub wouldn't show anything so I wonder if the flash itself is actually good but something else in the controller is flaky. It did not start exhibiting this behavior until a year or two into service.

@feld I’ve had this issue on 3 systems, from low load proxy and firewall, to high periodic load desktop/poudriere, and constant medium load server. In all cases a full power cycle is required to recover.

I have 2x1TB 980pro from 2022 batch, still fine but the 2021 was plagued with bad FW.

If it's proven to be a firmware issue, you might ask for a replacement/compensation, in EU at least.

@omar @dch I did a deep search of my massive email archive and it's not in there at all. I'm guessing I acquired this specific NVME from some retailer like Best Buy and never kept the receipt.

@feld there was a firmware upgrade about 18 months ago that definitely helped https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-980-pro-ssd-failures-firmware-update I see there’s a newer one on Samsung site now

@meka @dch it's possible their firmware can be updated with the linux fwupd or whatever tool. it can do other disk and controller firmwares, so perhaps it can do NVMEs too???
