Another follow-up after several more DMs, and I really need to share this observation:

There are a bunch of folks (at least in my own network) who are using LLMs every day, and are seeing solid success addressing very specific personal obstacles. Things that you and I might take for granted, but that others need a hand with.

They’re having fantastic success with this, but you’re not hearing about it. Why? Because they don’t want to get raked over the coals for using LLMs.

😕

@adam boosting this, not because I use LLMs (I don't, don't rake me over the coals pls mastodon), but because 💯 the people who do choose to use AI should not be villainized if they are not 1) actively eliminating someone's job or 2) just cloning some popular app/etc. to make a quick cash grab.

@adam@social.lol from a purely technological perspective it is literally insane what it is possible for computers to do nowadays. The things LLMs do were utterly unthinkable when I was getting into computers.

I remember back when that one outlet (WaPo maybe?) published that tool to check whether your domain/writing was in their training sets, and lo and behold mine were pretty extensively used.

Nevertheless, it has never been a wonder to me that some people are understandably excited or in awe when they use LLMs themselves. I can't fault people for that, and I can't pretend AI isn't objectively pretty cool or could never possibly be useful in *any* scenario.
