@cell @kaia i can confirm that legal migration is very hard, but if you don't care about it, it's not hard to live in the US illegally (not being especially criminal, just working and living there without having the appropriate visa)

@lain @kaia there’s so many loopholes and little tricks you can do, like extending your student visa to find and secure a job for a few years before the need for a work visa kicks in (OPT)

encounters arent immigrants. it is literally the number of encounters the border peeps had with people without legal documents. it could be 10 million times the same guy. the border patrol did certainly not let those 8 million people in.

it doesnt make sense to compare the question with this number.

@lain @grillchen @kaia @cell I'm gonna assume some people are going to be double counted if they went back to their home country, then came back later. One of the reasons many business owners like to employ illegal immigrants is because they can treat them like shit and threaten to report them to ICE when they complain. Sometimes they will actually do just that. It probably won't make that much of a difference though.
