They're targeting US assets and assets the US depends on. They decided that they made a mistake last time and allowed the US and Israel to restock munitions and attack again. So now it's existential.

The key thing to watch for is whether Iran's government has lost control, because once that happens there isn't really any global strategy anymore, just unstoppable violence.

You know what sounds like a good idea? Bomb a class of people (muslim arabs) who have feared drone strikes for the past 20 years and make martyrs out of their old dying leaders. Except this time do it to the only nation with hypersonic missiles.
Well, the only country which knows how to build hypersonics is Russia, but they benefit from rising oil price, and they also benefit from the US becoming mired in the chaos, so there's no reason why they wouldn't continue giving them to them.
