Offline most of today. Failed Internet. And the cable company tries to route all technical support to a chatbot which, guess what, only works when you have a working Internet connection. So you get through in one of the rare moments of connectivity, and the chatbot says, oh, we tested your connection and it's working now, can I offer you a pre-approved Mastercard? And then the connectivity dies again.

Gell-Mann amnesia moment: news stories about OpenAI reporting, or not, the Tumbler Ridge shooter's "posts" to the police.

OpenAI runs a chatbot, not a social network. The shooter didn't "post" anything there, but had a PRIVATE CONVERSATION. We are upset because, after routinely snooping on the conversation as they do on all conversations sent through their service, OpenAI didn't record the shooter's PRIVATE CONVERSATION and take it to the police.

Just like the phone company, right?

@bob I'd caution strongly against this interpretation because people will use it to draw incorrect conclusions about copyright and "citation."

It's all very well to make theoretical statements *among theorists* about generation being "equivalent" to a search engine (after all, everything is equivalent to searching the Library of Babel); but lay persons will assume that means it's searching real documents that actually exist and that it necessarily copied from, and that way lies trouble.
