It's scary just how uninformed and just passive people are. Was pointing out the flock cameras springing up everywhere to a coworker and what they were being used for and he was just uninterested.

It's actually a time horizon issue. They are mortified by the same powers if the government is currently run by the team they don't like.
They allow their team to enact broad sweeping powers on the assumption that the Bad Team will never ever get power for any reason.
