Yes and no. Russia considers Iran useful, but they also make deals with Israel all day.

Russia is one of those pure geopolitical actors that has literally no alliances, and they just play the game to win it.

@cjd @Sternritter-C @Bunsen @Frondeur @PalePimp @Terry Russia's larger geopolitical goal is to prevent US hegemony in the region. A weak Iran or worse, an Iran allied with the West would weaken Russia's position in the region. Iran is a neighbor. It's the issue with NATO in Ukraine. Encirclement.

US already has/had a hegemony. They own Israel (51st state), they're super tight with the Saudis, they have bases all over the place.

Russia is banking on a collapse of the American Empire, and their long term goal (IMO) is to re-unite the Orthodox world and bring back Constantinople.
