It's very ingrained in American patriotism to think everyone loves them and that they do so much good around the world, even though they have made everything worse for everyone for more than a century now. Something good happened? That was us! Something bad happened? That was just the regime, it's not our fault!

He's the worst sort, one of those who romanticize the very recent past of his country and wants to pretend that they were a force for good. There's a lot of those, but that doesn't mean it's not coal.
