@sun i'm pretty sure the reason why you can't get a good printer normally is because the FBI/CIA/whatever really doesn't want people having access to printing capabilities without the yellow tracking dots. they've struck deals with printer manufacturers to not print without yellow ink, and i'm guessing they require DRM cartridges for similar reasons.

though i doubt they can stop people from DIYing their own printers into existence. i doubt they can even make it illegal.

@Lupi @sun Aside from thermal paper being covered in BPA, I think A4 sized thermal paper would get expensive. Just use a B&W laserjet. It takes me years to use up a toner cartridge and I don't think they have tracking dots.
