@sun Love the high lethality fights that can often be over in a couple of turns. Love that buffs, debuffs and status are very useful, unlike most JRPGs that make them mostly useless by making the few enemies that are vulnerable to them be the ones so easy you don't need them. Am uncertain about the slow attrition of MP being basically your limit to exploration. Love the demon mechanics, hate how bleh the humans are as RPG characters.

Love my buddy Jack Frost. Hee-ho!
@Arkana @sun the fusion system (combined with a severe dropoff in power as the monsters gain a couple levels) encourages you to keep experimenting with new fusions/recruitments. this can be exciting for some players who enjoy the novelty, but irritating for players who want a consistent party.

maybe some genius game designer could appeal to both groups and keep them happy.
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun Yeah there is probably some way you could do the fusion system with upgrades. Like turning demons into equipment that are used or something.
Persona helps mitigate things a bit since only your main character actually has a bunch of demons and all the side characters just have their own.
My favorite in the series is probably Devil Survivor. Being able to build each of the characters differently is pretty fun. It does get very hard though in some of the endings
@Arkana @sun I agree that Devil Survivor is a good mixture of the two. you have your human characters (important to the story) that are with you the whole game and are constantly improving stats and learning new skills. then you have the monsters (not important to the story) where you're constantly replacing them and experimenting with new loadouts.

plus, you can have 4 teams per battle (each with 1 human and 2 monsters) so there's a lot of variety and synchronization potential. I particularly liked using King Frost for much of the game, even after he was outclassed stat-wise, because of his racial skill that gives your team free MP restores. it was that useful.

I like Devil Survivor 1&2 a lot, and I wish Atlus would make more of then.
@sun The biggest thing modern entries lack is good dungeons. They're either boring linear hallways or ruined by overtuned quality of life stuff like being able to save anywhere. my favorite moment in the series is in megami tensei 2 where you claw all the way to the top of a tower for something and you end up losing your arm permanently so you gotta treck all the way back to the bottom and back to town while your resources are already depleted but now you also are constantly loosing hp and can't access your comp. It was a really memorable moment.
