I did a pretty deep dive on that question and what I found was they just blamed everything kings ate. Because back in the day pretty much only royalty got gout.

Jared Leto needed to gain a bunch of weight for a role so he gorged himself on carbs and got gout. When he cut out the carbs the gout went away.
bro 100%. It’s hard for me to put to words, because I do think modern medicine is incredible, but it seems like they “overact” sometimes. Most healing comes from getting homeostasis back and letting the body do its thing. Sometimes
that’s “impossible” (is it though?), and that’s when things go off the rails. I started getting into chiropractors and naturopathic stuff a few years ago after doctors couldn’t diagnose an injury that an LMT detected (hip/glute) while working on my neck. Nobody even thought to check for fascia issue while I had two doctors and two nurses fondling my balls looking for a hernia.

I’m not exaggerating— I was getting a massage for shoulders and neck killing thirty minutes and the dude was like “hey, there’s a weird response in this part of your trap… I’m going to follow this down, tell me if it gets worse.” He traces it and then stops once he gets near my rear and asked if I had any injuries. I tell him and then he found it in like 15 seconds. Most painful thing of my life followed by relief of pain I had dealt with for years.
